Dr. Virender S. Sangwan honored at the Duke Eye Center on May 25, 2011 for his monumental efforts directed to vision restoration in patients with the most serious of ocular blinding conditions.  Dr.  Sangwan serves as the Associate Director of the L V Prasad Eye Institute in India where he is directs the Corneal /Anterior Segment / Ocular Immunology / Uveitis Services.  Having successfully treated now over 700 patients previously considered inoperable or poor candidates for corneal transplantation, he has developed the technique of ex-vivo expansion of corneal limbal stem cells to successfully repopulate the ocular surface to re-establish suitability for further transplantation and surgical repair.  He shared this technique at the Duke Eye Center during a lecture co-hosted by Drs. Mark Fernandez and Natalie Afshari. Alan Carlson, M.D. pointed out the Dr. Sangwan’s career is notable for a persistence and passion for restoring eye sight in the most challenging patients.
