The passing of David J. Apple, M.D., marks our loss of a great man. Great in so many respects. Innovative thought leader, teacher, scientist, researcher, investigator, physician, philanthropist, historian and author only begin to describe the traits Dr. Apple possessed and effectively used to help, train and inspire others. His legacy in the fields of ophthalmology and pathology will endure as no single individual has done more to advance the concepts contributing to the safety and efficacy of intraocular lens used in modern cataract surgery. He will be missed by all who have ever had the privilege of his teaching, leadership, mentorship, and friendship.
