TearScience receives FDA clearance

Morrisville-based TearScience Inc. said Wednesday that it has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance for the next generation of its LipiFlow Thermal Pulsation System. That product is a medical device that treats evaporative dry eye by liquefying and evacuating obstructions in meibomian glands located in the eyelids. Alan N. Carlson, M.D., Professor of Ophthalmology and Chief of the Corneal and Refractive Surgery Service at the Duke Eye Center in Durham, NC has worked in collaboration with TearScience Inc. for the past 4 years and has actively used the TearScience LipiView and LipiFlow devices at Duke Eye Center since October 2011.
