Cataract surgery remains one of the most common surgical procedures performed in the United States and Worldwide.  Few surgical procedures can claim the same degree of advancement and success in terms of technique, equipment, safety, and end result as cataract surgery – often improving a patient’s quality of life enormously.  Alan N. Carlson, M.D., Professor of Ophthalmology and Chief of the Corneal and External Disease Service at the Duke Eye Center in Durham, NC notes that each surgical procedure is a series of successful steps each building upon the properly performed previous step.  The following video highlights these steps during routine cataract surgery with insertion of an intraocular lens implant.
